Heat warning continues across much of Ontario as temperatures approach 37 C

Environment Canada says a heat warning remains in effect across large parts of Ontario, with the hottest conditions of the current heat event expected today.

The weather agency says some areas of southwestern Ontario, including Windsor-Essex, the greater Golden Horseshoe and eastern Ontario could see daytime highs reach 37 C this afternoon, while humid conditions will make temperatures feel even warmer.

The warning is expected to end tonight in parts of central and northeastern Ontario. However, Environment Canada says the hot and humid conditions could persist into Wednesday or Thursday across portions of southern Ontario.

Officials are also warning that the heat may contribute to worsening air quality. The Air Quality Health Index could approach the high-risk category in some regions as the combination of heat and humidity continues.

Environment Canada is urging residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

Health officials say older adults, people living alone and other vulnerable individuals are at increased risk during extreme heat events. Residents are encouraged to check on family members, neighbours and friends several times a day, either in person or by phone.

People are also being advised to watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, excessive thirst, dark urine and severe fatigue. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should stop strenuous activity, move to a cooler location and drink water.
