Drug poisonings on the rise in Chatham-Kent

Chatham Kent Public Health is warning of an increase in drug poisonings and unexpected reactions within the municipality.

Health officials said this serves as an important reminder that the unregulated drug supply is unpredictable and always changing— substances may not be what individuals expect, increasing the risk of harm or death.

If a member of the public comes across somebody in distress, they are advised to call 911, give naloxone if an opioid overdose is expected, noting that it may take more than one dose, don’t leave the person unattended and stay with the person until paramedics arrive.

If you are a person who uses substances, it’s recommended to avoid using alone, if you’re using with others, take turns spotting for each other, have a safety plan, check your drugs with a test strip and avoid mixing drugs.
