Lake Cowichan probes suspected arson fires at municipal facilities

Three suspected arson fires at municipal facilities in Lake Cowichan, B.C., in a single day have prompted a warning from town officials and an RCMP investigation.

Multiple municipal sites were targeted, including public washroom facilities.

“These are acts of arson and are deliberate, senseless and disturbing,” the Town of Lake Cowichan said in a social media statement.

The incidents have raised concerns about risks to public safety, municipal staff and emergency responders.

“Municipal infrastructure exists to serve the community,” the town said in the statement.

“Acts of vandalism and arson divert valuable public resources away from important community priorities and can result in temporary closures or reduced access to public amenities and services.”

The incidents have been reported to the RCMP and remain under investigation.

Officials say deliberately setting fires can result in significant legal consequences, including criminal charges.

Anyone with information about the incidents, or who saw suspicious activity around municipal facilities, is asked to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP detachment at 250-749-6668.

“Community safety is a shared responsibility,” officials said. “The town appreciates the continued support of residents in helping protect public spaces and ensuring municipal facilities remain safe, accessible and welcoming for everyone.”

No injuries have been reported and police have not released information about suspects.
