Your commute to work or home may just feel a little bit shorter in the near future. Starting June 26, the government of Ontario is raising the speed limit across sections of many of its provincial highways from 100 km/h to 110 km/h. Speed limit increases will be applied to the select areas starting in June but will take until the end of Sept. to fully implement. Sections of Highway 400, 401, 402, 403, 416 and 417 and Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) will also be subject to similar increases this summer. The province says the decision comes after “successful” speed limit increases were made on the QEW in 2022 and sections of the 401, 403 and other highways in 2024. In a statement shared Wednesday morning, the provincial government says most of Ontario’s freeway network was originally designed to “safely accommodate” a posted speed of 110 km/h.
