Eastbound lane of Victoria’s Bay Street Bridge now closed for 4-month remediation project

The eastbound lane of the Bay Street Bridge heading from Vic West into Rock Bay is now closed, as remediation work is about to get underway. The lane will be closed for the entire four-month project, which will see the expansion joints on the crossing replaced.

The westbound lane into Vic West will remain open throughout the project, and detour signs have been set up notifying drivers that the Johnson Street Bridge is the best option to get into Victoria’s core.

Ross Kenny, the assistant director of transportation with the City of Victoria, says some changes have been made to the Johnson Street Bridge to alleviate congestion on the crossing.

“One of the things that we’re doing is that we’ve made changes to the traffic signal timing at the Johnson Street Bridge and we’re going to continue to monitor that as construction progresses and continue to make changes as required,” said Kenny. “We’re also working on other projects in the city and trying to minimize disturbances and other impacts.”

There will be a full closure of the Bay Street Bridge beginning at 9 p.m. on Tuesday for four hours to allow crews to stage the equipment necessary to complete the project. Following that, the westbound lane will reopen for good.

The Bay Street Bridge was built in 1957 and this work is intended to extend its life.
