The sound of birds, the warmth of a summer afternoon and a herd of therapy horses grazing quietly nearby will set the scene as the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA) welcomes the community for an afternoon designed to celebrate connection, compassion and the quiet bond between people and horses. The non-profit organization is hosting its annual “Picnic with the Herd” on Saturday, July 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Saanichton facility, inviting families, friends and animal lovers to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the therapeutic riding programs that have supported people across Greater Victoria for decades. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch, blanket or lawn chairs and settle into the outdoor riding ring while VTRA’s therapy horses graze freely in the neighbouring pasture. The event offers a rare opportunity for visitors to experience the peaceful environment where the organization’s programs take place. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds supporting therapeutic riding programs for children, youth and adults living with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can also enjoy treats from local vendors. Beyond the picnic, the event highlights the important role therapy horses play in the lives of participants. Through riding and hands-on interaction with the horses, participants build confidence, improve balance and strength, gain independence and form meaningful connections in a supportive environment. For many, the programs provide a sense of accomplishment, connection and belonging. The event also gives residents a chance to see firsthand how VTRA combines the therapeutic benefits of horses with personalized programs designed to support participants’ physical, emotional and social well-being. Whether visitors come for the horses, the peaceful surroundings or a summer afternoon with family and friends, organizers hope they leave with a better understanding of the quiet impact these animals have on the lives of the people they serve.
