October snow in the forecast for highway in B.C.’s Southern Interior

A major highway in B.C.’s Southern Interior could see up to 10 centimetres of snow this long weekend, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The weather agency issued a special statement Friday for Highway 97C between Merritt and Kelowna, a stretch of road better known as the Okanagan Connector.

According to ECCC, a cold front moving through the provincial Interior will begin to drop temperatures on Saturday afternoon.

That “rapid cooling,” combined with moisture from a system moving through Washington state is “likely to give snow over the high-elevation highway passes” this weekend, ECCC said.

While other routes may see some flakes, the special weather statement singles out the Okanagan Connector as the most likely site for snow, with “highly variable” total accumulations between two and 10 centimetres possible.

“Snow may rapidly accumulate on roads and visibilities may be greatly reduced leading to difficult travel conditions,” Environment Canada said in the statement.

“Please continue to monitor for rapidly changing weather conditions.”
