A woman is dead after being struck by an unmarked police vehicle in Surrey, B.C., over the weekend, prompting a watchdog investigation. The Surrey Police Service said the pedestrian collision happened on 152 Street between 64 and 66A avenues around 7:20 p.m. Sunday. “Despite medical attention from SPS officers, Surrey Fire Service firefighters, and (B.C. Emergency Health Services) paramedics, the woman tragically passed away at the scene,” the department said in a news release. The collision closed a stretch of 152 Street for several hours so investigators could examine the scene. Authorities did not say whether the woman was in a crosswalk or had the right-of-way, or whether the SPS vehicle had lights or siren activated at the time of the crash. Police said they notified the Independent Investigations Office of the incident, and directed any questions toward the watchdog. “SPS is unable to provide additional information while the IIO’s independent process is taking place,” the release added. The IIO is tasked with investigating all officer-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm, regardless of whether there is an allegation of wrongdoing against police.
