Update: The strike ended Monday, but YVR warned customers that it would take several days for operations to return to normal and advised anyone planning to fly WestJet to check their booking with the airline. Dozens of flights out of Vancouver International Airport were cancelled Sunday morning after WestJet flight attendants went on strike. The cancellations come as the airport was expecting an average of 85,100 passengers per day over the B.C. Day Long weekend. “We are increasing our terminal staffing to support affected travellers as best as possible, but WestJet passengers are advised to check the status of their flight or access information about rebooking before coming to the airport,” a statement from YVR posted online Sunday said. “WestJet passengers should not come to YVR unless they have a confirmed itinerary.” At the airport, striking flight attendants picketed outside the terminal while frustrated would-be passengers tried to figure out their next moves inside. William Tweddle arrived at YVR after disembarking a cruise ship Sunday morning. His original itinerary had him arriving home in Scotland Monday morning, but after spending hours trying to get help on the phone and in person, he said his best option won’t see him arriving in Edinburgh until at least Wednesday. “It’s totally screwed up,” he told CTV News, adding “WestJet have been absolutely no help whatsoever.” Negotiations between the airline and the union representing flight attendants are ongoing.
