Vancouver police say no criminal charges after girl, 8, dies in highrise fall

Police in Vancouver say there will be no criminal charges laid after an eight-year-old girl died in a fall from a highrise balcony last month.

The Vancouver Police Department on Thursday said it had concluded its investigation into the death of Gandom Taheri, who fell from the 23^rd floor of a condo building in the city’s Yaletown neighbourhood.

Police described the incident in a statement as “a tragic accident” after the department’s major crimes division investigated the circumstances that led to the child’s death.

Taheri, who lived in Squamish, B.C., was visiting her father’s condo when she fell from the balcony on Nov. 11.

“Through our investigation, we have gained a better understanding of the circumstances that led up to this tragedy,” a police spokesperson told CTV News while the investigation was still ongoing.

“We owe it to the little girl’s family and loved ones to share our findings with them first, before disclosing them publicly.”

Friends and family held a memorial service late last month, where the girl was remembered as a kind and loving child who brought joy to those around her.

The police statement Thursday did not describe the events that led to the girl’s death beyond calling it a “horrible tragedy.”

Officers were called to the condo building near Nelson Street and Expo Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a child falling from an upper floor.

First responders provided emergency aid to the girl before she was pronounced dead at the scene.
