Train carrying fuel derails near Kamloops, B.C.

An environmental assessment is underway after a locomotive and 17 cars derailed near Kamloops, B.C., Saturday, according to officials.

The Canadian Pacific Kansas City train went off the tracks around 7 p.m. about 20 kilometres west of Kamloops, an incident description posted online by the B.C. government said.

“There were no injuries. The cause of the derailment is under investigation,” according to the description, which noted not all of the cars were full.

“Four of the cars are loaded with fuel, five loaded with gypsum, and one loaded with pulp products. The other rail cars are empty, including three that last contained gasoline.”

CPKC, in a statement, said “some product” has leaked from the cars loaded with fuel and a containment boom, meant to keep leaked substances at bay, has been set up in Kamloops lake.

“CPKC crews and equipment, including environmental teams, are on site conducting a full assessment and beginning work on a clean-up,” a spokesperson wrote.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District, in an online statement, said there is no risk to the local public water system anticipated but that the health authority is working with operators of private systems to assess impacts.
