Traffic alert: Overnight closure on Highway 1 through Burnaby this weekend

Drivers are being warned to expect “major delays” in Burnaby this weekend when a stretch of Highway 1 will be closed overnight for construction of a pedestrian overpass.

Lane closures on Highway 1 between the Sprott and Gaglardi exits will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday. The highway stretch will then be fully closed overnight, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

A full closure in both directions is required so crews can safely lift bridge deck over the highway, officials said.

The overpass is set to connect Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake parks for pedestrians and cyclists.

In a statement, the City of Burnaby said the lifting of the bridge deck is an “important milestone” for the Burnaby Lake Overpass, which is expected to open in early 2026.

During the work, traffic will detour onto Lougheed Highway and vehicles must exit Highway 1 at the Willingdon, Sprott or Gaglardi exits.

Officials said to expect major delays on Highway 1, Lougheed Highway and surrounding areas during the closure and advised drivers to either avoid travelling during that time or use an alternate route.
