‘Threats of explosive device’ prompt evacuation, brief closure of Vancouver’s Waterfront Station

Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver was evacuated and closed Sunday while police investigated a bomb threat.

At 11:15 a.m. SkyTrain and SeaBus service were temporarily halted and buses were being detoured.

Roughly an hour later, service had resumed and the station reopened.

The Metro Vancouver Transit Police said, in a statement, that someone made a 911 call around 10:30 a.m. that involved “threats of an explosive device” at the busy transit hub.

“Officers from Metro Vancouver Transit Police and the Vancouver Police Department arrived on scene and out of an abundance of caution, immediately evacuated the station,” police said, adding that explosive detecting dogs and a drone were also involved in the search, which did not locate anything suspicious.

“We believe that this is a ‘swatting’ style incident and there is no current threat to public safety at this time,” police added.
