Police in Abbotsford impounded a BMW Friday after clocking the teenager behind the wheel driving at nearly three times the posted speed limit.

The traffic stop occurred on Livingstone Avenue, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a post on social media.

The 18-year-old driver was recorded travelling 140 km/h in an area where the speed limit is 50 km/h, police said.

“When stopped, the driver claimed he was late for an exam and needed to make up lost time,” reads the department’s post.

“However, excuses don’t override road safety.”

The teen was ticketed for excessive speeding – which is defined in the Motor Vehicle Act as travelling 40 km/h or more over the posted limit – and his vehicle was impounded.

The BMW was one of seven vehicles stopped for excessive speeding overnight Friday into Saturday, police said in their post.

So far in 2025, Abbotsford police officers have impounded a total of 127 vehicles for excessive speeding – an average of more than one per day.
