Suspect arrested after ‘vicious assault’ at SkyTrain station, police say

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a “vicious assault” at New Westminster SkyTrain Station earlier this year, Transit Police announced Thursday.

Police said the victim was waiting for an elevator on the evening of Sept. 18 when a stranger approached and started talking to him.

In a news release, Transit Police said the victim “turned to ask the man to stay away from him,” at which point the stranger “grabbed him and began to punch and kick him.”

The victim suffered “significant trauma to his face” during the unprovoked attack, authorities said.

Investigators have since identified a 36-year-old suspect from New Westminster, and officers arrested him on Nov. 24. He has been released from custody pending a court appearance.

“Transit Police wants to send a clear message that we take violence on transit seriously,” said Const. Amanda Steed, in a statement. “We investigate every incident fully and do our part to ensure that anyone who threatens the safety of the travelling public is held accountable for their actions.”

Authorities said they are recommending the suspect be charged with assault causing bodily harm. His name will not be released unless charges are approved by prosecutors.
