Drive far enough down most rural roads in Metro Vancouver and you are bound to come across an illegal dump site containing discarded sofas, appliances and other waste. The issue came to a head a few days ago when a group of Surrey residents confronted some men they say were illegally dumping blocks of concrete from a demolition job. A video of the encounter has made the rounds on social media. “I will tell you that we’re actively investigating this and we have identified the individuals,” said Jas Johal, director of bylaws for the city. In the social media video, the men can be seen loading the concrete into their trailer after bystanders apparently blocked the road so they couldn’t leave. The city would prefer if witnesses took photos or videos from a safe distance. “Do not confront them because you just never know who is who nowadays,” Johal said. “It’s best to report it to bylaws. And if you feel that your safety is at risk, then you’re best to call the police.” Fines for illegal dumping start at $500 and range all the way up to $10,000. Harry Janda, the city’s solid waste manager, told CTV News people don’t have to risk getting a ticket because residents can make an appointment to have the city pick up unwanted furniture and appliances for free. “We’ll send a truck out there to pick it up right in front of your home,” he said. “So, there’s no need for residents to go out of their way and dump it, either in front of their homes or secluded areas, or in ditches, alleyways, etc.” Starting May 4, residents can also drop off up to 100 kilograms of waste per household for free at the city’s recycling and waste facilities.
