Sex offender with history of targeting children moving to Vancouver, police say

A man convicted of sex crimes against children will be living in Vancouver, police said in a warning issued on Monday.

Authorities have issued a public warning about a high-risk sex offender who will be living in Vancouver.

Shaun Deacon, 60, was released from custody Monday but remains under a long-term supervision order for accessing and possessing child pornography, the Vancouver Police Department said in a news release.

“Police believe compelling reasons exist to warn the public that Deacon poses a high risk to children—predominantly boys—in the community,” the VPD said.

Deacon has a lengthy criminal history that includes convictions for sexual offences against children in 1988, 1996 and 1998. He has also breached long-term supervision orders on several occasions over the last 20 years.

It’s unclear where in the city Deacon might be residing.

Authorities noted he is bound by a number of court-ordered conditions, including that he avoid places where children under the age of 16 are likely to be present.

Deacon is also barred from being in the presence of anyone under 16, police said, or communicating with them either “directly or indirectly.”

He’s not allowed to possess any device capable of accessing the internet, or any images of children under the age of 16 in any form.

He’s also barred from having contact with anyone with a history of sexually offending against minors—and is required to report all of his relationships, including those that are non-sexual.

The Vancouver Police Department asked anyone who sees Deacon violating any of his conditions to call 911.
