Police watchdog investigating after man shot in Burnaby, B.C.

A police-involved shooting after an alleged domestic dispute on a quiet street on Monday afternoon has rattled residents.

A British Columbia police oversight agency is investigating after a man was shot by police and seriously injured in Burnaby.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. says it was notified of the shooting shortly after it occurred, and is now investigating the conduct of the officer involved.

Police were called to a reported domestic dispute at a home in the 4300 block of Dundas Street just before 3 p.m. Monday.

The responding officer encountered the man on the street outside the residence, and according to a statement from the RCMP, the man was in possession of an “edged weapon.”

“There was an interaction, one officer discharged their firearm and the man was shot,” the IIO said in its own statement following the altercation.

The RCMP statement said the man suffered gunshot wounds and was in serious condition in hospital Tuesday.

“Nobody else was injured in the incident,” the police statement said.

The shooting scene has been cordoned off while investigators with the police oversight agency gather evidence.

The IIO will now work to determine whether the man’s injuries meet the threshold of “serious harm,” and, if so, whether the harm was the result of police action or inaction.

“If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred,” the IIO statement said.

“At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.”

Under the provincial Police Act, “serious harm” is defined as an injury that may result in death, disfigurement or loss of function of a limb or organ.

The IIO is asking anyone who witnessed the altercation, or who has video of the incident, to contact investigators.

The Burnaby RCMP says it is conducting its own investigation into the circumstances that led to the initial call for police.

“As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO B.C., no further information will be released by police,” the detachment said.
