Police say speed, alcohol factors in crash that killed 25-year-old in Nanaimo, B.C.

Police investigating a weekend crash that killed a 25-year-old man and sent another to hospital with minor injuries say speed, alcohol and road conditions likely contributed to the single-vehicle collision in Nanaimo, B.C.

The crash was reported just before 3 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Bowen Road and Pryde Avenue.

The Nanaimo RCMP say the two men were travelling northbound on Bowen Road in a Ford F-150 pickup truck when the driver lost control, veered off the roadway and struck a light pole.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene while the passenger sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for “precautionary purposes,” police said in a statement Monday.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

“Speed, alcohol and road conditions are believed to be contributing factors,” the statement said.

“The vehicle was towed from the scene. The investigation continues.”

The northbound lanes of Bowen Road were closed to traffic for several hours while investigators examined the scene.
