Police say a home in New Westminster’s Massey Heights neighbourhood was the target of an arson early Monday morning, just one day after a break-and-enter in the same residence. The New Westminster Police Department said officers were called to the 800 block of York Street at around 3:45 a.m. Local firefighters were already on scene extinguishing the flames. Police said investigators are working to determine whether the break-in and fire are connected. “At this stage, we believe both incidents were targeted rather than random,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, in a news release Tuesday. “There is currently no indication of an ongoing risk to the public, and Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses to better understand the circumstances surrounding both incidents.” Photos taken by CTV News show the front of the home and its roof charred by fire damage, several broken windows, and the yard fenced off with crews in attendance. Police confirmed the residents weren’t home at the time of the fire, so there were no injuries to report. The NWPD did not specify whether anything was taken during the break-and-enter. Anyone with information connected to these incidents has been asked to call the NWPD at 604-525-5411.
