Nanaimo man facing 11 charges, firearms seized after assault investigation

A 46-year-old man is facing nearly a dozen charges after an alleged case of intimate partner violence in Nanaimo, B.C.

Police were called to reports of a disturbance at a home in the city’s downtown core just after midnight on March 27, the Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

Attending officers located a woman at the home who reported being assaulted before the suspect fled in a vehicle.

Const. Gary O’Brien said the victim did not require medical attention. Officers seized several firearms from the home while the suspect, who was located in a parked vehicle a short distance away, was arrested.

The RCMP identified the suspect as Darcy Chartrand, of Nanaimo.

Online court records indicate Chartrand was charged with one count of assault and 10 counts related to improper possession, use and storage of firearms.

The case is marked as a “K” file, which the B.C. Prosecution Service uses to designate cases involving allegations of intimate partner violence.

Chartrand appeared in Nanaimo provincial court on Tuesday and was released from custody pending his next court appearance scheduled for April 7.
