A car that plunged into B.C.’s Squamish River with four people inside earlier this year has been recovered, yet one of its occupants remains missing, say police. According to a Squamish RCMP release, search and rescue and underwater recovery teams pulled the car from the depths on Saturday amid “challenging conditions” after “diligent efforts” monitoring the river’s water levels. The Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed into the Squamish River in the early hours of June 14, plunging four men who had been in the area camping with friends below its icy surface. Three were able to escape, while a fourth, 24-year-old Surrey resident Navdeep Singh Sidhu, was unable to be found. In the days following the crash, search and rescue teams used boats, drones and a helicopter in search of Sidhu and the sunken car, to no avail. At the time, Mounties said the river conditions were too hazardous to mount an underwater recovery mission. In the RCMP release, issued Wednesday, police confirmed “one passenger remains unaccounted for” and that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
