Man speaks out after brother hit by car while cycling in Kitsilano

The family of a man struck by a vehicle in a hit and run in Vancouver is calling on the driver to come forward.

Matthew Yeung was biking home from school when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Creelman Avenue and Maple Street in Kitsilano. The collision was all caught on camera. His brother Benjamin Yeung said after his brother was hit, the video showed the driver “continued to keep driving without stopping.”

Yeung told CTV News that when his brother told him he had been hit, he was in shock. “I was just very worried.”

Medical professionals told Matthew he was lucky, walking away from the collision with a concussion and other minor injuries. Yeung added what contributed to this was the fact that his brother was wearing a helmet.

“I’m just happy that he took the precaution to wear a helmet,” he said.

However, he said his worry has turned into frustration. “This is a cyclist that you hit blatantly in broad daylight, and you didn’t even hesitate or attempt to stop,” Yeung said.

Yeung took matters into his own hands, posting on social media to find answers.

According to the B.C. Injury Research Prevention Unit, each year within the province more than 2,600 cyclist-related incidents occur, resulting in over 1,500 injuries and an average of seven deaths.

Yeung told CTV News his brother filed a police report. The Vancouver Police Department confirmed in an email Friday morning that it had been notified of a hit-and-run crash and is investigating.

“The driver has not yet been identified or located,” the VPD said.

Yeung is looking for the driver to take responsibility. “You should be held accountable for your actions and just be a decent human being to just check on someone’s well-being,” he said.

He added he had not asked his brother if or when he would be getting back on his bike. However, Yeung emphasized that he was proud of the way he handled the incident. “I think his whole attitude for this was just being grateful.”
