Man shot in New Westminster, police say

A wounded man was found by a patrol officer in New Westminster after a shooting early Friday morning.

A man was taken to hospital after being shot in the early hours of Friday morning in New Westminster, according to police.

In a statement, the New Westminster Police Department said an officer conducting patrols in the 100 block of Columbia Street around 3 a.m. found a man “lying on the ground in apparent distress.”

“Upon approaching the man, the officer saw he was suffering gunshot injuries,” the statement reads.

The man was given first aid and taken to hospital, police said, but did not disclose the extent of his injuries.

The NWPD’s Major Crime Unit was called in to investigate, and Columbia Street was closed for several hours as a result.

“Our officers are working to determine exactly what the circumstances are and who’s involved, and ultimately to determine why this happened,” spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Leaver said at a press conference.

Police were also investigating at Tipperary Park Friday, but haven’t disclosed what they were looking for.

“Investigators are working at multiple scenes right now. This is a dynamic investigation, and given we’re in the early stages we’re working to determine exactly what those two locations mean and whether or not they’re connected,” Leaver said.

No arrests have been made so far.
