Man dead after rollover crash on Highway 5, RCMP say

A man died at the scene of a rollover crash on B.C.’s Highway 5 Monday morning, according to authorities.

Officers were called to Highway 5 north of Merritt around 7:45 a.m. for a collision involving a sedan and a semi-truck, a news release from the RCMP said.

“A Honda Accord was travelling southbound on Highway 5 and rearended a semi-truck. The semi-truck was travelling in the slow lane when it was struck, and the car rolled coming to a stop in the ditch,” the statement from the Merritt detachment said.

“Merritt Fire Rescue extracted the lone occupant of the Honda. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, a Kamloops man, was declared deceased at the incident.”

The driver of the truck was uninjured and is co-operating with investigators, police added.

The fatal crash caused an hours-long closure of the highway, which fully reopened around 2 p.m.
