High-tech running shoe claims to revolutionize running

Just in time for the spring racing season, adidas has unveiled a new high-tech running shoe it claims will allow you to run faster and longer.

The Energy Boost athletic shoe’s sole is the first of its kind on the market. The sole looks like Styrofoam, but it’s actually made from thousands of foam pebbles melted together to give it more flexibility and bounce.

Currently, 95 per cent of running shoes on the market are made with EVA foam and when you compare the two materials by bouncing a metal ball on top of them, the Energy Boost foam provides more spring.

“You're going to notice it on longer runs, after a while your knees and joints really take a beating but with the new energy boost your legs feel fresh you're getting that energy from the pounding into the sole of your shoe,” said Devin Delany, adidas brand marketing representative.

Review sites weren’t able to quantify just how much energy return the shoes provided, but several people who tested the shoes at the Running Room said you could feel a difference.

Running shoe giant Nike has also come out with new technology this year, although it is focusing on the upper part of its running shoes with the new Flyknit Lunar 1+. The knitted upper shoe is one lightweight piece of fabric that is form fitting and virtually seamless.

The new Nike shoe took the Editor's choice award in the March edition of Runner's World.  The adidas Energy Boost was top choice for "Best Neutral Running Shoe of 2013" on runningshoesguru.com.

The adidas Energy Boost men and women’s shoe retails for $150. The Nike Lunar Flyknit 1+ sells for $185.
