Police offer ‘friendly reminder’ after electric tricycle stopped on busy B.C. highway

Police issued a “friendly reminder” this week about which vehicles are—and are not—allowed in the HOV lane on the Trans-Canda Highway through Metro Vancouver.

The Burnaby RCMP stopped the driver of an electric tricycle Thursday and shared a photo and a brief statement on social media shortly thereafter.

“Your tricycle does not qualify for the HOV lane on Highway 1 in rush hour traffic. In case you’re wondering, it’s a $109 fine,” the post from the detachment said.

Motorcycles and electric vehicles with only one occupant are allowed in the high-occupancy vehicle lane on Highway 1—but only if they can maintain a minimum speed of 60 km/h. E-bikes or e-trikes are legally required to max out at a speed of 32 km/h in British Columbia.

Riding a bicycle or tricyle—electric or otherwise—is not allowed on most of Highway 1 through the Lower Mainland but is allowed on some parts of major B.C. highways.
