Drunk biker clocked at 196 km/h on Sea to Sky Hwy., pickup driver caught smuggling cigarettes: RCMP

A motorcyclist and a pickup driver were stopped hours apart on the Sea to Sky Highway last weekend, in what police called a “single day of alleged speeding and smuggling” on the busy route.

B.C. Highway Patrol said officers clocked a 40-year-old man going 196 km/h on a Suzuki motorcycle on Saturday afternoon – and that he later failed two roadside breathalyzer tests.

“On the bright side, the motorcyclist did not die or kill anyone else,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in a statement.

“Excessive speed plus alcohol impairment is a recipe that we see time and again in fatal collisions.”

The Abbotsford resident was given a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and an excessive speeding ticket, police said. His Suzuki was also impounded for 30 days.

That morning, officers stopped a prohibited driver who was behind the wheel of a pickup in downtown Squamish, B.C. Highway Patrol said.

The 42-year-old was allegedly in possession of seven cases of unstamped contraband tobacco products.

McLaughlin said the North Vancouver man was “suspected to be operating an illegal tobacco store,” and will be heading to court on allegations of prohibited driving and possessing unstamped tobacco products.
