‘Dangerous’ auto-transport truck pulled off B.C. highway

A commercial trucker was hit with hefty fines and had his rig taken out of service after he was pulled over north of Kamloops last week, according to the B.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of the auto-transport truck, a 53-year-old man from Abbotsford, was fined a total of $1,996 on March 28, and Mounties described some of the “dangerous” issues observed in a statement Thursday.

“None of the vehicles being transported on the trailer were properly secured, and three were not secured at all,” the statement from the BCHP said, adding that there were “ineffective, poorly maintained brakes on the tractor unit and trailer,” and “leaks in the air brake system and the exhaust.”

Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said the number of fatal crashes along the stretch of Highway 5 north of Kamloops has been declining in recent years. Still, he said enforcement of the rules for commercial truckers remains a priority along the route.

“We will continue to work to make the area even safer,” he said, in a statement.

A two-day blitz in the area earlier last month, in which 35 vehicles were inspected, resulted in 200 motor vehicle charges and nine trucks being taken out of service, police said.

“The majority of commercial drivers put in the time and expense to make sure their vehicles are safe and legal, while a minority of drivers are causing the most problems,” McLaughlin’s statement said.

“We want to make sure that only ethical, professional drivers are left operating on our highways.”
