Crowds of illegally stopped cherry blossom viewers prompt RCMP warning

The gorgeous cherry blossoms all over Richmond are creating an ugly situation for Mounties.

Dozens of illegally stopped vehicles were seen along a stretch of road near Vancouver International Airport last weekend as crowds gathered to view cherry blossoms, according to authorities.

The Richmond RCMP issued a warning Tuesday, saying stopping is prohibited on Russ Baker Way near Larry Berg Flight Path Park because it creates unsafe conditions.

Mounties issued 32 tickets, towed two vehicles and issued “numerous warnings” over the weekend, the statement from the detachment said.

“At the height of enforcement approximately 50 vehicles were observed stopped illegally, contributing to traffic flow and safety concerns,” the statement continued.

“No Stopping signs are posted along this stretch of road. Drivers are reminded that these restrictions exist to keep all road and park users safe.”

Police encourage people seeking a glimpse or photo of the blossoms to plan their visit ahead and to obey all traffic signs.
