Feline frenzy: 50 purr cent off cat adoption fees The BC SPCA is hoping a new promotion for cats in need of fur-ever homes will be like cat nip for prospective pet owners.

The BC SPCA is trimming adoption prices in half next month in the hopes of purr-suading potential adopters to consider an adult cat.

There are currently more than 1,700 cats in foster care and at SPCA shelters across the province, and more are coming in every day, said Jane Talbot, director of regional operations for the animal welfare agency.

That's why from Oct. 1 to 14, all BC SPCA branches will be offering 50 per cent off adoption fees for adult cats.

The fees vary by branch, but normally range between $90 and $175, and include microchip/tattoo as well as spay/neuter surgery, if necessary.

"We're hoping this promotion will encourage anyone who has been considering cat adoption to take the next step and make it a reality," Talbot said in a release.

"Kittens are always in high demand, but the goal during this event is to find fantastic homes for as many felines as possible."

Adult cats have certain benefits, she added, because they're calmer and more settled, not to mention litter trained. Their personalities are also already developed, so their owners will know what to expect.

BC SPCA said its usual adoption criteria, designed to match pets with adopters who have compatible personalities and lifestyles, will apply during the promotion.

The agency brings in more than 15,000 cats and kittens each year in the province.
