4 youths charged after assault in Abbotsford’s Mill Lake Park, police say

Four youths have been charged in connection to an incident in Abbotsford’s Mill Lake Park, local police say.

The situation unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. on Oct. 3, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a news release Thursday.

Officers were called to the park for “a report of a weapons-related incident,” the release reads. When they arrived, they found a youth who had sustained “minor injuries” after being shot with a BB gun.

Police said there had been “a disturbance” involving several people.

The department’s Youth Squad identified the four young people responsible for the assault and seized “a Glock-style BB gun and multiple knives” at the scene, police said.

The injured youth was taken to hospital for treatment. The four arrestees have been charged with offences including assault with a weapon, assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of a release order, according to police.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the four accused offenders cannot be named because they are under 18.

“AbbyPD’s Youth Squad continues proactive enforcement efforts, including curfew checks and increased patrols – both uniformed and plainclothes – at key community locations such as shopping malls, bus loops, parks and youth centres,” police said in their release.

“Officers remain committed to a zero-tolerance approach toward youth-related criminal activity here in Abbotsford.”
