A virus outbreak on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has killed four dogs, prompting the B.C. SPCA to step in and offer free vaccines. The charity said it received a call to its animal helpline from a building manager in the area, reporting a number of sick pets. “As soon as it was confirmed that we were dealing with a possible canine parvovirus outbreak, B.C. SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital teams jumped right into planning a free vaccination clinic so vulnerable dogs and puppies could be protected,” said a statement from veterinarian Dr. Kyla Townsend, who noted the virus is highly contagious, often deadly, and that unvaccinated puppies are most at-risk. The organization said 92 dogs and puppies were inoculated on Jan. 22 in Oppenheimer Park. People who attended the clinic were also urged to monitor for signs of the virus which can include lethargy, appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. “Anyone whose dog or puppy is showing these symptoms should seek veterinary help right away. Early treatment for parvovirus is critical for recovery,” Townsend said, in the statement.
