Up to 25 mm of rain possible in the Toronto area overnight: conservation authority

A storm is expected to bring up to 25 millimetres of rain to the Toronto area Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, according to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).

“Thunderstorms are forecasted to begin from midnight tonight and continue throughout early morning tomorrow,” TRCA said in its advisory on Tuesday

Although flooding is not expected, rivers may rise and flow especially fast during the storm.

“All rivers and streams in the (Toronto region) should be considered dangerous, as it may cause rapidly changing water levels, faster and stronger flows, and unstable riverbanks,” warned the TRCA.

It advises avoiding rivers, commuting cautiously, and monitoring public alerts during the storm.

Rain may pool in floodplains, low-lying areas, on roads, near storm drains and underpasses, the TRCA said.

There are no active weather alerts from Environment Canada.

The federal agency’s forecast calls for 10 to 15 millimetres of rain Tuesday night with a risk of thunderstorms overnight.

On Wednesday, showers will end by noon. The daytime high will be 16 C.
