Mom, son caught in police chase escape with no injuries

A mom and her young son survived a police chase that ended in a collision Tuesday morning with no injuries.

Virginia Lake was taking her 2-year-old son Hunter to a babysitter when they were unexpectedly caught up in the chase around 7:40 a.m.

Lake told CTV Toronto she was driving when suddenly she saw a police cruiser in her rear-view mirror. She had no idea a driver was being chased until the driver of the pursued car crashed into hers near the intersection of Clark Boulevard and Dixie Road.

“I remember spinning and seeing him spin at the same time and we ended up facing each other,” she said.

Immediately after the crash her first instinct was to rush to her son’s side.

“I was absolutely terrified. I was in shock and I immediately turned around and he was just sitting there like nothing happened,” Lake said. “I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough, but my car was jammed so I was pushing. I got out, ran around to the side and pulled him out of the car.”

Neither suffered any serious injuries and, after an examination by paramedics, returned to their home.

“I’m a lucky mom,” Lake said.

Police say the chase began when a car refused to stop for a routine traffic stop on the 401 near Kipling Avenue. Police pursued the car up Highway 410, when it exited at Williams Parkway and headed east before turning south on Dixie.

The chase finally ended when the car collided with a civilian vehicle.

Two men were arrested at the scene, one suffered minor injuries.
