4 suspects arrested after jewelry store robbery at Upper Canada Mall leads to crash on Hwy. 404

Police say four people have been arrested after crashing their vehicle on Highway 404 while allegedly fleeing a jewelry store robbery.

Four people have been arrested after a collision on Highway 404 involving a vehicle that was used to flee a jewelry store robbery at a Newmarket mall on Wednesday afternoon.

York Regional Police (YRP) said a call came in shortly before 5:30 p.m. for a commercial robbery at Upper Canada Mall.

Five suspects entered a jewelry store and stole unknown quantities of merchandise, YRP said. During the robbery, two people were pepper-sprayed.

The suspects drove away but YRP said they followed the vehicle to Highway 404 near Steeles Avenue East.

Officers subsequently took four suspects into custody. Police said a fifth suspect remains outstanding.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), they responded to a three-vehicle collision on the southbound lanes of Highway 404 near Steeles Avenue around 5:45 p.m.
