Get them while they last: Oilers jerseys back in stock, for now

Fans snapping up Oilers jerseys An important win for the Oilers means a big boost for retailers.

Edmonton Oilers jerseys are back in stock after fans saw them disappear more than a week ago, thanks in part to the anticipation of a new jersey supplier.

The Oilers are in the playoffs for the first time in a decade, causing a surge in jersey sales at a time when supplies are lacking. Beginning in the 2017-2018 season, Adidas will become the NHL’s official jersey supplier instead of Reebok.

According to Kelly Hodgson, brand manager at United Cycle, Oilers jerseys are in short supply across the country in anticipation of the switch.

“Reebok wants to be as close to zero as possible when the NHL season is done,” Hodgson told CTV Edmonton. “They’ve done their buying according to that.”

Many stores have managed to re-supply their stock of bright orange and blue jerseys after the initial buying-craze, including Edmonton’s west-end Pro-Hockey Life that features a wall of jerseys for Oilers’ scoring leader Connor McDavid.

According to staff at United Cycle, they’ve managed to scrape together a few hundred Oilers jerseys from stores across Canada, but they don’t expect them to last -- especially if the Oilers move past the first round.

“I think we’ve exhausted our efforts,” said Hodgson. “I say that when we have our buyer on the phone every day trying to secure more jerseys (from) anywhere in North America.”

The Edmonton Oilers are currently leading the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in their playoff series.
