These counterfeit banknotes are circulating in Prince Albert, police say

The Prince Albert police are warning the public about counterfeit Canadian banknotes circulating in the city.

According to police, over the past few days numerous reports of fraud have been filed with counterfeit $100 and $50 notes being used to purchase items at local businesses.

“In many cases, an individual enters a business and pays for an item with a counterfeit $100 or $50 note and receives real Canadian currency in exchange,” the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) said in a news release.

Police say the counterfeit banknotes look similar to real banknotes but have some distinct differences. They are a slightly different colour, have no raised edges, and the ink may scratch off easily. Additionally, they may have the same serial number.

What to do if you suspect a counterfeit note

If you suspect you are being offered a counterfeit note, police say assess the situation ensuring you aren’t at risk and then politely refuse the note and explain that you suspect it may be counterfeit.

• Ask for another note and inspect it carefully
• Advise the person to check the note with the police
• Call the police to report the incident
• Be courteous and remember that the person in possession of the bill could be an innocent victim who is not aware the note is suspicious.
