Saskatoon Food Bank calls for donations during city-wide food drive

Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre says it urgently needs donations as its month-long city-wide food drive gets underway.

The annual program runs in May, and the food bank says it needs donations for households facing food insecurity.

“It can feel like one small act of support won’t make a difference. But when a community comes together, those small acts add up,” said executive director Laurie O’Connor in a news release. “City-Wide Food Drive gives people a simple way to turn small acts of giving into a big impact.”

O’Connor says right now, more households in Saskatoon are feeling the pressure of rising costs, while incomes and support systems struggle to keep up.

This year’s theme, “Don’t let your neighbours fall through the cracks,” focuses on the reality that many are facing behind closed doors.

According to the food bank, on average 23,000 people use the service each month, with nearly 40 per cent being children.

The food bank is urging the community to come together for the campaign, raising money to meet the growing need for emergency food support in Saskatoon.

Most-needed items include baby food and formula, canned fruits and vegetables, soups and stews, whole-grain pasta and cereals, canned protein, and peanut butter.
