Saskatoon’s Broadway Bridge to reopen after six months of construction

The Broadway Bridge is set to open after six months of construction.

After closing in May, the bridge will reopen on Saturday evening with all pedestrian and vehicle traffic expected to resume.

The most notable change motorists will notice is a reconfigured intersection at 19th Street and 4th Avenue.

The unique, and sometimes confusing intersection is now a traditional T-intersection. Northbound traffic going from Broadway towards downtown will have to come to a stop or continue down 19th street.

The traffic light on the bridge is gone, eliminating the ability for northbound traffic to split on to either side of the island media either 4th avenue or 19th street. There’s also going to be pedestrian crossings throughout.

Traffic coming from downtown to Broadway Avenue will have to either continue along 19th Street or turn left at the new 19th and 4th Ave intersection.

With the area returning to normal, businesses on Broadway are ready for the roadblocks to be removed.

“I think everyone is breathing a sigh of relief,” said Anne-Marie Cey, the executive director of the Broadway Business Improvement District.

“So, it’ll be back to business as usual. Summer was a challenge. There was a lot of construction with Link and of course, the bridge closure.”

The city says the changes at the downtown intersection are largely for buses, as the city prepares to launch Link in 2027.

Other than that, everything on the bridge is new. New asphalt, new traffic barriers and new railings.

Crews spent a majority of the time removing old utilities underneath the bridge. That work will continue beyond Saturday but won’t affect traffic.

The city says the last time the bridge underwent this level of repair was 38 years ago in 1987.

Saskatoon Transit will resume Route 8 service along Broadway Avenue once the bridge reopens.

Service to temporary stops on Victoria Avenue and travel along the Traffic Bridge will end when regular service on Broadway resumes.
