Saskatoon Berries force do-or-die Game 3 in first round of WCBL playoffs

The Saskatoon Berries staved off elimination in Game 2 of the first round of the 2025 WCBL Playoffs against Moose Jaw Thursday.

After losing Game 1 of the East Division semi-final Wednesday, the Saskatoon Berries stayed off elimination in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) playoffs – blowing out the Moose Jaw Miller Express 15-6 Thursday night.

After a 6-4 Miller Express win in Game 1, Saskatoon faced a win-or-go-home situation Thursday on the road at Ross Wells Park in Moose Jaw.

Despite the slow start to the series, the Berries’ bats finally came alive in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits.

Muenster, Sask.’s Merek Yeager took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning for Saskatoon, before the Millers would finally get on the board. It was 10-0 Berries before Moose Jaw would record their first hit.

All-Stars Carter Beck and Corey Wouters combined for six hits, three for extra bases, eight RBIs and two runs scored – with Beck hitting his first homerun of the postseason.

Saskatoon’s win ties the series at one game apiece.

Game 3 was set for Friday night at the NexGen Patch at Cairns Field, but the game has been postponed to Saturday night due to inclement weather.

“Any tickets purchased will be valid for the rescheduled game tomorrow,” the team said.

Regina Red Sox await Game 3 winner

Meanwhile, the Regina Red Sox are headed to the East Division Final for the first time since before the pandemic, after sweeping the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the first round.

Regina handily taking a 13-7 win over Medicine Hat Thursday night in Game 2, winning the best-of-three series two games to none.

The Red Sox got out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, en route to the blowout win.

Regina-product Brady Bye led the team at the plate, going 3/5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

On the mound, Chris Spry went six full innings, giving up four runs, walking two batters and striking out seven.

The series win ended the Red Sox’s playoff losing streak of four-straight series, dating back to 2019 when they reached the WCBL championship series – a series they lost 2-0 to Okotoks.

Regina did not field a team in 2020 nor 2021 but were swept in the first round each of the next three years from 2022-24.

The Red Sox now await the winner of the other East Division semi-final between the Moose Jaw Miller Express and Saskatoon Berries.

If the Berries win Game 3, the first game of the East Division Final against the Red Sox would be hosted in Saskatoon. However, if Moose Jaw wins the series, Game 1 would be in Regina.

Regardless of where the game is hosted, Game 1 of the East final will be Sunday night.
