Sask. residents may begin receiving personal documents amid postal strike

The ongoing Canada Post dispute has many in Sask. feeling frustrated as they navigate uncertainty. Hallee Mandryk reports.

Canadians can expect to see some mail, but delays and backlogs will continue to be a challenge, as the union representing Canada Post workers has shifted to rotating strikes.

Among the countless documents stuck in limbo, many personal documents, such as passports, driver’s licences and health cards, are slowly moving toward those waiting on them.

“As of right now, we’re still just kind of unsure about how much of a delay we’re going to be dealing with when it comes to getting those documents out to people with rotating strikes still ongoing, but we’ll have a little bit of a better understanding of what that delay looks like in the weeks to come,” Michaela Solomon, a communications consultant in media relations for SGI, said.

According to SGI, folks waiting on a driver’s licence are offered a temporary one. It’s a practice that has existed long before the Canada Post strike, but certainly comes in handy during instances like this one.

“When you come to get your new driver’s licence or identification document, SGI will write you a 90-day temporary driver’s licence or ID card that you can use for a time period of 90 days while you await your official document to come in the mail,” Solomon said.

As far as health cards go, eHealth shared a statement with CTV regarding their current process.

“eHealth continues to process health card applications and customer change requests. Since rotating job action has begun, we have reverted to regular mailing processes for health cards.”

eHealth said it encourages clients to use online alternatives to mail when applying for cards or updating information.
