Prince Albert Police investigating after man dies in hospital following ‘altercation’

The Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) is investigating after a man who had been involved in a fight late last month died in hospital over the weekend.

On Sunday, April 5, police were notified by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service that a 50-year-old man had passed away at Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatoon.

The coroners service learned from the man’s family that he had been involved in a “physical altercation” on March 29. Given this fact, police began an investigation into the circumstances of the victim’s death.

On Sunday, March 29 at around 7:20 p.m., police responded to a home on the 100 block of 17th Street West for a reported assault. Officers found an injured man at the scene who had been involved in an altercation with another individual who was known to him.

The man was conscious when he was taken to Victoria Hospital by paramedics. His injuries consisted of bleeding from the nose and mouth. He left the hospital prior to being seen by a doctor.

On April 2, the man returned to Victoria Hospital, where he received treatment before being transferred to RUH – where he later died.

Police say an autopsy is being conducted Tuesday to determine the man’s cause of death.

The investigation remains ongoing. PAPS noted that there is no risk to the public related to this incident.
