Pre-evacuation alert re-issued in Candle Lake as Camp fire advances

WATCH: The pre-evacuation alert on the Resort Village of Candle Lake was lifter Wednesday at noon.

The Resort Village of Candle Lake is the subject of a pre-evacuation alert yet again as the nearby Camp fire advances due to high winds and dry conditions.

The lake’s emergency service is asking residents of the Resort Village to be on pre-alert for possible evacuation.

“These weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days. While there is no immediate danger, residents are being advised to stay alert and begin planning for a potential evacuation, which could occur on short notice should the situation escalate,” the community said in the alert sent shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.

The previous alert was in effect for about a week before it was lifted on Wednesday, May 21.

“The reason we’ve lifted it is because the SPSA reports that they have the fire somewhat contained,” Candle Lake Fire Chief Jim Arnold explained on Thursday. “The last I heard, it was about 70 percent contained.”

As of 4 p.m. May 25, there were 19 active wildfires burning in the province. According to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA), there have been 196 wildfires so far in 2025.

Two of these fires are located near the Resort Village of Candle Lake – the Shoe shire to the north and the Camp fire to the east.
