Pre-evacuation alert lifted from Resort Village of Candle Lake, Sask.

The pre-evacuation alert for the Resort Village of Candle Lake was lifted Wednesday at noon.

The alert was issued last week due to out-of-control wildfires in the area.

Brent Lutz, chief administrative officer for the village, says they saw a normal amount of traffic over the May long weekend despite the alert.

“I think a lot of people were concerned about their seasonal properties,” said Lutz. “They may have come to the lake just to make sure everything was okay. Then those extra people were probably balanced out by some people who chose not to come because of concerns.”

The Shoe wildfire to the north was 20,000 hectares, and the Camp wildfire to the east was 42,000 hectares as of Thursday morning.

While both fires are still considered uncontained, Candle Lake Fire Chief Jim Arnold says the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has made progress on the Camp fire.

“The reason we’ve lifted it is because the SPSA reports that they have the fire somewhat contained,” said Arnold on Thursday. “The last I heard, it was about 70 per cent contained.”

The fire chief and the village both say the lack of rain has been concerning. Environment Canada says the area isn’t expected to see rain until next weekend.

“The only benefit that we’ve had with the weather is that it’s been cool,” said Lutz. “But it’s been somewhat breezy and dry, and those are certainly conditions that add to the difficulty of fighting the fire.”

It will be business as usual for the resort village unless the risk returns.
