P.A. family fundraising to have room in Victoria Hospital named in honour of late son

WATCH: A Prince Albert family is fundraising for the new hospital in honour of their late son.

A Prince Albert mother is fundraising for the new addition to Victoria Hospital in honour of her late son.

When Trish Hart first decided to help fundraise, she was hoping to get a memorial wreath on the Victoria Hospital’s tree of life in honour of her son Kenna Cook.

“My auntie says that my boy was born very special and that he had a battle to live from the start,” said Hart. Kenna passed away last year, days before his second birthday.

When Hart shared a link to the fundraiser on social media, someone messaged her suggesting she think bigger than a wreath.

Hart now hopes the updated hospital will have a room in pediatrics named after Kenna once construction is complete. She has since been in contact with the Boreal Healthcare Foundation about the idea.

“The reason why we are doing this is because we want our son’s life to be acknowledged,” explained Hart. “I want people to know that our son’s life mattered.”

Hart is a mom of five and she says Kenna’s siblings are supportive of the fundraiser in their brother’s memory.

“Even though he’s not here to tell his story, his mom and dad [are] here to tell his story,” she said. “Although his life can’t be saved, at least he’s going to be able to save a bunch of other babies.”

Hart says that Kenna liked dinosaurs and was very loved by his grandparents.

Kenna spent a lot of his life at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and the Jim Pattison Hospital in Saskatoon due to complex medical needs, so Hart says she wants to help other families in need of pediatric care.

This fundraiser is part of the Boreal Healthcare Foundation’s “Equip the Vic” campaign to provide equipment and comfort items for the hospital.

Kenna’s fundraiser is open until the Give a Little Life Day Radiothon on December 5.
