Man faces multiple charges after shooting on Sask. Cree Nation

A 34-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a shooting on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

At around 5:15 a.m., on March 10, officers were called to the community, located about 241 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert, for a report of a shooting, RCMP said in a news release.

Arriving officers found an injured man in a vehicle on Highway 55 who was then taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the incident began with an altercation between two men inside a home on the community. A firearm was discharged and one of the men was injured. He then left the residence.

The other man prevented a woman from leaving before leaving the home himself, police said.

The woman did not report physical injuries to police.

Later that day, RCMP arrested a suspect on Shoal Lake Cree Nation and seized a sawed‑off firearm.

Police have charged 34‑year‑old Billy Whitecap, from Red Earth Cree Nation, with several offences, including aggravated assault, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and multiple firearms‑related charges.

He also faces counts of discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm and weapons possession contrary to an order.

Whitecap appeared in court in Nipawin on March 11.

RCMP say they continue to investigate.
