Man charged after colliding with school while trying to evade police

Saskatoon police say a 39-year-old man is facing multiple charges after driving a truck into a school while attempting to evade officers over the weekend.

Just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday night patrol officers attempted to stop a Chevrolet Silverado near Confederation Drive and Laurier Drive, when the man refused to stop before eventually pulling over on 22nd Street near Witney Avenue, a Saskatoon police news release says.

Officers discovered the man did not have a valid driver’s licence and was breaching court-ordered conditions. Once he was notified of his arrest, police say he drove away at a high rate of speed before colliding with the W.P. Bate Community School.

Police did not say if anyone was injured in the incident.

Photos of the incident shared with CTV News show the truck took out the school’s flag pole and smashed a whole through a section of brick wall near the entrance.

The 39-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, obstruction and breaching court-imposed conditions, Saskatoon police said.
