An overnight warming shelter that welcomed about 100 men a night last winter is reopening in Saskatoon. The Salvation Army’s overnight shelter at St. Mary’s Parish opens tonight and will operate every night from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March. The men-only shelter has no beds, but offers a warm meal and a place to escape the cold. Derek Kerr, the Salvation Army’s public relations officer in Saskatchewan, said the shelter saw record demand last year. “It’s being a good neighbour, bringing those who are experiencing homelessness into a warm, safe environment overnight,” Kerr said. St. Mary’s is one of three overnight warm-up locations in Saskatoon.
