You could have called it highway robbery on ice: an unbelievable stop by Huskies goalie Nolan Maier in last weekend’s playoff series against UBC. Some are calling it the save of the series while others say it’s the save of the year. “They were doing everything to put the puck in the net. And then it squirted out past to the weak side. I was able to slide over and make a glove save. So, I was pretty fortunate to get that one” Maier said. The save was posted on X and has racked up almost 17,000 views. Though Maier says social media attention is not the main goal. “I’m just happy the team won. And it’s just exciting for us to get that first win to get some momentum going into the second one,” said Maier. The Huskies would go on to win game two punching their ticket to the conference championship. “It was a good shot, but Nolan has shown every game he’s just in there battling for us. He just pushed across and made an unbelieve save so it was fantastic.” Heading into the Canada West Finals, Maier leads the conference in almost every post-season goalie stat and forward Connor Roulette has the most goals and points — two players, along with a few others, who previously wore a Saskatoon Blades uniform. Now they are hoping to bring the Huskies a second straight conference title. “Even playing with Chase Bertholet in Spokane and some guys throughout minor hockey and stuff like that. Just being able to connect with them again, its been really good and we are a real tight knit group,” said Roulette. “It’s pretty special that I am able to play some old teammates of mine in the blades. So it’s really cool for me,” said Maier, who joined the Huskies mid season. Familiar players and a familiar scene for the Huskies, once again in the Canada West championship, hoping to defend their title win from last year, in a rematch against Mount Royal University. Head Coach Brandin Cote says his team is well tested and is familiar with handling high pressure situations. “I feel like in the post season we’ve gotten better every week here. We’re on the upswing for sure and we’ve got a veteran group that’s got there before, knows how to win so I feel confident heading into this series.” Game One of the Canada West Men’s hockey championship starts Friday night in Calgary.
